How do you avoid queues on the golf course?

You avoid queues by pacing yourself against the flight ahead, not the one behind. Play ready golf, get ready while others hit, cap ball searches at three minutes, and wave through when you fall a full hole behind. For the club, it comes down to the right tee intervals and knowing which holes actually cause the backup.

Why does golf take so long?

A round of golf takes time because 18 holes means 5–6 kilometers of walking and roughly 80–100 shots per player. But when a round stretches past 4.5 hours, the cause is almost always a queue: tee times packed too tightly, a few slow holes, long ball searches, and waiting on the tee. The golf itself rarely takes that long.

How long does a round of golf take?

An 18-hole round normally takes 4 to 4.5 hours for a foursome walking, and around 2 hours for 9 holes. Two or three players typically get around in 3.5 to 4 hours. Anything over 5 hours for 18 holes feels slow to most people, and is usually caused by queues – not the players’ skill level.

Ready golf means the player who is ready hits first – regardless of who is furthest from the hole. It's recommended in stroke play and in all casual rounds, and is one of the simplest fixes for slow play. Safety always comes first: never hit when someone is within range.

The Rules of Golf expect you to play without undue delay and to be ready before it is your turn. The right tee interval is the shortest spacing the course can handle without building up congestion. Many clubs use 8–12 minutes. If the interval is too tight relative to how long the first holes actually take to play, the delay carries backward and slows down every round – often without increasing capacity.

Congestion almost always starts on one or two holes. Typical bottlenecks are par-3 holes where everyone waits for the green to clear, long par-5 holes with a challenging approach, holes with a long walk from the previous green, and holes with heavy rough or water where ball searches take time.
