Pace of play

    Pace of play in golf

What pace of play means, why it is one of golf’s biggest challenges, and how clubs can measure and improve it with data.

    What is pace of play?

Pace of play is golf’s term for tempo – how quickly a round is completed. It is not about rushing, but about keeping a steady flow that matches the course’s capacity and number of players.

    Recommended time per hole

For a four-ball, a good baseline is around 10 minutes on a par-3, 13 minutes on a par-4 and 16 minutes on a par-5. That adds up to roughly four hours for a standard 18-hole round, though it varies with course length, difficulty and the distance between holes. It is usually delays on specific holes – and tee intervals that are too tight – that build up a queue on the course.

Play time vs. total round time

Play time is the time from when the ball leaves the tee until it is in the hole. Total round time also includes walking between holes, waiting and breaks. That is why a round with around four hours of pure play time can end up closer to five hours in total – this is the flow GolfAppen measures.

    Working systematically with flow

Clubs that work deliberately with pace of play use data to set the right tee intervals, place the marshal where the queue actually starts, and give members concrete feedback.

    Why pace of play matters

Slow rounds are not just annoying for those stuck in the queue. They also reduce the course’s capacity, increase wear on certain holes, and can make the member experience worse. Many clubs find that tempo is one of the most frequently mentioned topics in member surveys.

    From rule to culture

Most golf rules and clubs expect players to keep up the pace. But the biggest impact comes when the club itself has data: which holes are slow, when in the day it happens, and which measures actually work.

    Measure pace of play automatically

GolfAppen uses GPS zones at the tee and green to record flow – anonymously and in real time.

    Frequently asked questions

What is pace of play in golf?
Pace of play is how long a round takes, measured both per hole and in total. Good pace means steady flow and little waiting on the tee.
How long should a round of golf take?
A fourball walking 18 holes normally takes 4 to 4.5 hours. Anything above 5 hours is usually caused by congestion rather than by slow players.
How can a club measure pace of play?
By recording timestamps when a group passes the tee and the green on every hole, giving actual hole-by-hole times instead of just start and finish times.
